What pay to put on a server poster
Posters with a real number get more walk-ins than “competitive pay.” For reference, the Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median for waiters and waitresses at $16.94/hr nationally and $18.88/hr in the Boston metro (May 2025 estimates). The full server salary breakdown shows the range.
The server role in one line
A server takes guests' orders, delivers food and drinks, and manages the dining experience from greeting to check. Servers sit at the center of the front of house, linking guests, the kitchen, the bar, and the host stand.
Requirements worth printing
Keep the poster to the two or three that actually screen people out. The rest belongs in the full posting.
- Previous serving experience preferred, though many places will train a strong newcomer
- Ability to carry trays and stand and walk for a full shift
- Comfort using a touchscreen POS and handling cash and cards
- State alcohol-server training such as TIPS is often required to serve alcohol
- Minimum age to serve alcohol where state law requires it
Typical schedule
Most servers work shifts of four to eight hours, split across lunch, dinner, and weekends, with the busiest and best-tipped shifts on Friday and Saturday nights.
