Also called: AM, assistant GM
What a assistant restaurant manager does
Assistant managers keep the restaurant running when the general manager is not there and help drive results when they are. They lead shifts, manage the floor, solve guest issues, handle cash and reports, and coach the hourly team. They also help with scheduling, ordering, and training. The role is a training ground for future general managers, so it rewards people who learn the numbers, show up consistently, and develop others. Expect a mix of floor time and administrative tasks, often on nights and weekends.
Pay snapshot: the BLS reports a national median of $33.36/hr for food service managers, and $44.55/hr in the Boston metro. See the full salary breakdown.
