Also called: shift lead, shift supervisor

What a shift leader does

Shift leaders take charge of a shift from start to finish. They assign stations, keep service on pace, enforce food safety and cleanliness standards, and solve problems on the spot. They also handle cash drops, counts, and basic paperwork, and they coach crew members during the shift. A strong shift leader balances working alongside the team with making decisions, stays calm in a rush, and shows the crew what good looks like. It is a practical path toward assistant manager and manager.

Pay snapshot: the BLS reports a national median of $21.19/hr for first-line supervisors of food preparation and serving workers, and $22.64/hr in the Boston metro. See the full salary breakdown.
