A server takes guests' orders, delivers food and drinks, and manages the dining experience from greeting to check. Servers sit at the center of the front of house, linking guests, the kitchen, the bar, and the host stand. Here is what the job looks like across a shift, in the order it happens.
Opening duties
- Clock in, check the schedule for reservations and large parties, and read the pre-shift notes
- Set up your section: wipe tables, align chairs, and set silverware, napkins, and condiments
- Stock the server station with straws, to-go boxes, pens, and check presenters
- Learn the specials, 86'd items, and any menu changes from the manager or chef
- Taste or review new dishes so you can describe them with confidence
During service
- Greet new tables promptly and take drink orders first
- Enter food orders in the POS with correct seat numbers, modifiers, and allergy notes
- Run food hot and drinks cold, and confirm each dish with the guest
- Check back within a couple of minutes of food arriving
- Clear plates as guests finish and keep tables free of clutter
- Present the check at the right moment and process payment accurately
- Reset the table quickly after guests leave and communicate with the host about open tables
Closing duties
- Complete side work such as polishing silverware, restocking sauces, and filling ice bins
- Wipe down all tables, chairs, and booths and sweep your section
- Close out your checks and tips in the POS and reconcile any cash
- Follow the manager's checkout process and turn in paperwork
- Reset the station for the next shift and report any issues
Weekly duties
- Attend the staff meeting and menu tasting if scheduled
- Deep clean assigned areas such as menu holders, high chairs, or the server station
- Review guest feedback and online reviews that mention your service
- Submit availability and shift swap requests ahead of the next schedule
