Also called: cashier, counter cashier
What a restaurant cashier does
Restaurant cashiers greet guests at the counter, take orders accurately, process cash, card, and mobile payments, and hand off tickets to the kitchen. They answer menu questions, apply promotions and discounts correctly, and keep the register drawer balanced. Speed matters, but so does a friendly tone, because the cashier is often the only staff member a guest talks to. The job suits people who are good with numbers, patient with a line, and comfortable repeating the menu all day without losing their smile.
Pay snapshot: the BLS reports a national median of $15.81/hr for cashiers, and $17.33/hr in the Boston metro. See the full salary breakdown.
