These questions are written for hiring a busser specifically. Each one includes what you learn from asking it and what a strong answer sounds like.

1. How would you reset a table as quickly as possible without missing steps?

Why ask it: Tests efficiency and attention to detail.

A strong answer: Describes clearing in one trip, wiping and sanitizing, and setting silverware and napkins in a set order, then telling the host.

2. The restaurant is packed and the host is waiting on a table. What do you do?

Why ask it: Shows urgency and teamwork.

A strong answer: Prioritizes that table, tells the host when it is ready, and asks a teammate for help if needed.

3. How do you carry a full bus tub safely?

Why ask it: Checks safe lifting habits.

A strong answer: Keeps weight close, uses proper lifting form, avoids overloading, and watches for wet floors.

4. What would you do if a guest dropped a glass near you?

Why ask it: Looks at safety and customer awareness.

A strong answer: Cleans up carefully, warns others of the hazard, and tells the manager if needed.

5. How do you work with servers who are all asking for help at once?

Why ask it: Evaluates prioritization under pressure.

A strong answer: Listens, handles the most urgent tasks first, and communicates clearly with everyone.

6. Tell me about a time you worked in a team to finish a big job quickly.

Why ask it: Shows teamwork and reliability.

A strong answer: Gives a real example where they stepped up and helped without being asked.

7. What would you do if you saw a coworker not cleaning properly?

Why ask it: Tests ownership of food safety and standards.

A strong answer: Talks to them respectfully, fixes the issue if necessary, and tells a manager if it continues.

8. How would you handle a guest who asks you for something that a server normally handles?

Why ask it: Shows hospitality and role awareness.

A strong answer: Helps with simple requests right away or tells the server quickly rather than ignoring the guest.

9. How do you stay focused during a long, busy shift?

Why ask it: Checks stamina and attitude.

A strong answer: Breaks the shift into tasks, stays hydrated, and keeps moving instead of waiting to be asked.

10. What does clean mean to you in a dining room?

Why ask it: Reveals standards of cleanliness.

A strong answer: Describes tables with no crumbs or streaks, clean floors, polished glassware, and a tidy first impression.

11. What is your availability, and can you work weekends and holidays?

Why ask it: Weekends are the heaviest for bussers.

A strong answer: States clear availability and shows willingness to cover busy times.

12. Why do you want to work in a restaurant?

Why ask it: Looks at motivation and long-term interest.

A strong answer: Talks about wanting to learn the business, work in a team, or move into serving or cooking.
