These questions are written for hiring a barista specifically. Each one includes what you learn from asking it and what a strong answer sounds like.

1. Walk me through how you would pull a good shot of espresso.

Why ask it: Tests real espresso knowledge or readiness to learn.

A strong answer: Talks about fresh grind, dose, tamp, extraction time, taste, and how they adjust grind when shots run fast or slow.

2. How do you steam milk for a latte versus a cappuccino?

Why ask it: Checks milk texture awareness.

A strong answer: Explains stretching and texturing differences, temperature, and microfoam, even if they are still learning.

3. It is 8 a.m. and the line is out the door. How do you keep up?

Why ask it: Shows how they handle the morning rush.

A strong answer: Describes staying organized, calling out orders clearly, communicating with teammates, and not sacrificing drink quality.

4. A guest says their latte tastes burnt. What do you do?

Why ask it: Measures service recovery and humility.

A strong answer: Apologizes, offers to remake it, checks the machine or milk, and learns from the feedback.

5. How would you respond to a guest with a milk allergy?

Why ask it: Tests food safety awareness.

A strong answer: Asks specifics, uses clean steam wands and pitchers, avoids cross-contact, and checks with a manager when unsure.

6. How do you remember complicated drink orders and regulars' preferences?

Why ask it: Looks at attention to detail and hospitality.

A strong answer: Uses shorthand, repeats the order back, and remembers regular guests' names and drinks.

7. Tell me about a time you worked a register and your drawer was off.

Why ask it: Reveals honesty and cash-handling habits.

A strong answer: Describes counting carefully, reporting the discrepancy, and changing a habit to prevent it.

8. What would you do if a coworker was not cleaning the machine at close?

Why ask it: Checks accountability and teamwork.

A strong answer: Talks to them respectfully, finishes the task if needed, and tells the manager if it becomes a pattern.

9. What coffee drinks or brewing methods do you enjoy, and why?

Why ask it: Shows passion and product curiosity.

A strong answer: Names specific drinks or methods and can explain flavor preferences in plain language.

10. How do you upsell without being pushy?

Why ask it: Balances sales goals with guest comfort.

A strong answer: Suggests a pastry or size upgrade that fits what the guest already ordered and accepts a no politely.

11. How would you handle a guest who is rude when the shop is busy?

Why ask it: Tests patience and professionalism.

A strong answer: Stays calm, keeps the line moving, and asks a lead for help if the guest becomes aggressive.

12. Why do you want to work in a cafe rather than another service job?

Why ask it: Gauges motivation and long-term interest.

A strong answer: Talks about craft, community, early-morning routine, or interest in coffee as a career.
